Where to from here? The Neart na Macairí project will hope to harness the incredible strength of the Maharees community to build resilience in the face of the climate impacts to come. It isn’t every day that a small west Kerry-based community like Maharees gets awarded a significant national project like the Creative Ireland Ignite project (Neart Na Machairi). It’s testament to the trojan efforts the Maharees community has made to date to work with state agencies, the local authority, academics and NGOs to address climate change impacts felt by the community. Úsáideann pobal an Mhachaire an chruthaitheacht chun dul i ngleic le hathrú aeráide.

Céard is ceart a dhéanamh? Beidh tionscadal Neart na Machairí ag súil le leas a bhaint as láidreacht dhochreidte phobal an Mhachaire chun teacht aniar a thógáil in aghaidh an tionchair aeráide atá le teacht.

Ní gach lá a bhronntar tionscadal suntasach náisiúnta cosúil le tioncadal Ignite Éire Ildánach (Neart na Machairí) ar phobal beag Ciarraíoch cosúil le muintir an Mhachaire. Is léiriú é ar obair na gcapall a rinne pobal an Mhachaire go dtí seo i gcomhar le gníomhaireachtaí stáit, leis an údarás áitiúil, le lucht acadúil agus le heagraíochtaí neamhrialtasacha chun aghaidh a thabhairt ar thionchair an athraithe aeráide. Sa tionscadal cruthaitheach gníomhaíochta aeráide seo tógfar ar an obair seo agus ar obair Mhol an Daingin a bhfuil gníomhaíocht fhiúntach aeráide ar siúl acu ar Leithinis an Daingin le deich mbliana anuas.

Tá sé mar aidhm ag an tionscadal ceisteanna a fhiosrú a bhaineann le hoiriúnú don athrú aeráide fadtéarmach, na dúshláin agus na deiseanna; conas is féidir leis an bpobal é féin a ullmhú le haghaidh na n-athruithe agus na tionchar atá le teacht ar an Machaire agus a bheith acmhainneach sa deireadh. I gcomhpháirtíocht le Cumann Caomhnaithe an Mhachaire, Mol an Daingin agus pobal an Mhachaire, tabharfaidh Neart na Machairí deichniúr ball den phobal ar aistear foghlama chun na dúshláin agus na deiseanna a bhaineann le hoiriúnú aeráide a fhiosrú, in éineacht le triúr cleachtóirí cruthaitheacha, Emer Fallon, Silke Michels agus Zoë Uí Fhaoláin Green, agus dearthóir tionscadail Zoë Rush, a bhfuil ról acu chun iniúchadh cruthaitheach agus comhoibríoch ar thodhchaí an Mhachaire a éascú maidir le hathrú aeráide agus caillteanas bithéagsúlachta.

“This project takes as its starting point that coastal resilience requires an integrated approach, drawing from deep place-based knowledge of these habitats and the customs and traditions of people who live within them as well as expert guidance and collaboration with state agencies to support and incorporate community visions of change within strategic and financial planning.” Dearthóir Neart na Machairí, Zoë Rush.

Dúirt Cathaoirleach Chumann Caomhnaithe an Mhachaire, Aidan O’Connor: “We have seen what we can achieve as a community when we have the knowledge and support of our stakeholders – we want to take that a step further now. Everyone talks about Maharees being impacted by climate change and sea level rise more than other places but we know there are solutions out there and adaptations we can make to be as resilient as we can going forward.”

Maoiníonn Éire Ildánach Neart na Machairí, gníomhú cruthaitheach ar son na haeráide a éascaítear trí chomhpháirtíocht idir Cumann Caomhnaithe an Mhachaire agus Mol an Daingin agus triúr ealaíontóirí leabaithe, Zoë Uí Fhaoláin Green, Emer Fallon agus Silke Michels agus an dearthóir tionscadail Zoë Rush
