In 2018, the Creative Ireland Programme and the Fulbright Commission in Ireland launched The Fulbright Creative Ireland Museum Fellowships.
The participating museums are the Smithsonian Institution (comprising 17 museums and galleries), the Harry Ransom Center in Austin,Texas and the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Since then several candidates studying for their PhDs have undertaken valuable placements in these prestigious American museums.
In 2019, the Fulbright Commission and the Creative Ireland Programme agreed to launch the Fulbright and Creative Ireland Professional Fellowship to enable participation by the many experienced cultural and creative professionals who may not be involved in academic work. This is to ensure that more people from the cultural and creative sector benefit from the Fulbright Programme.
This unique opportunity is more flexible than the museum based fellowships. It does not require successful applicants to be involved in doctorial education, nor is it limited to prescribed host US institutions. Applicants need to identify placements that they feel best meets their needs as experienced cultural and creative professionals and the ambitions of their respective practice.
In this year’s round of applications, there will be the three Fulbright Creative Ireland Museum Fellowships as well as two placements for the Fulbright and Creative Ireland Professional Fellowship. To ensure you have all the information you require before applications open in August you are invited to a webinar 1pm 6th April 2021.
Attending the webinar will be representatives of The Fulbright Commission Ireland and the Creative Ireland Programme who will outline how to succeed at the application stage. The presentation will be followed by a questions and answers session. Links to join this webinar are below.
Also attending will be Helen O’Donoghue (Head of Engagement and Learning at the Irish Museum of Modern Art ). In 2018 Helen spent three months in New York at MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) as a Fulbright Scholar. Helen will discuss her experience at MoMA and how she feels the experience impacted on her work at IMMA.
Applications for the Fulbright and Creative Ireland Programme Fellowships open in August and close on 31st October 2021.
