Roscommon Young Carers Exhibit Artistic Triumphs

Following a triumphant Cruinniú na nÓg event on June 15th, the Roscommon Young Carers Project have showcased their “Carers Connect” murals at the Roscommon County Council Offices. The initiative has been expertly facilitated by Art Psychotherapist Emily Cuddy. The official opening, attended by parents and young artists, took place on June 28th.

Supported by Avril Mannion, the Roscommon Young Carers Project Coordinator, “Carers Connect” is the culmination of several workshops that explored the theme of caring through the ages. These murals, chosen for their ability to foster connection, reflect the experiences of young carers.

Through vibrant images, thoughtful colour choices, and evocative statements, the murals depict both the positive and negative aspects of caregiving. This project enabled the young carers to bond over shared experiences and collaborate on artistic layouts. The murals serve as a bridge between the young carers and the wider community, presenting impactful images designed to engage and resonate with viewers.

The creation of these murals began with project workshops and culminated in an outdoor exhibition on The Square in Roscommon for Cruinniú na nÓg on June 15th. Initially, the project supported by the Roscommon Creative Ireland Programme 2023 as an Equality Diversity and Inclusion Bursary that was awarded to Emily Cuddy to work with the Young Carers at the South Roscommon Family Resource Centre, it was developed into an exhibition for the Cruinniú na nÓg Programme 2024 and now sits pride of place in the Roscommon County Council exhibition space for all to admire.

This exhibition not only showcases the artistic talents of the young carers but also highlights the therapeutic and connective power of art.
