Wild Trad Tunes
Traditional Irish tunes are often named after people, places or things dear to our hearts. Reflecting on the repertoire of tunes played, it is clear that many have a strong tie to nature. This project celebrates that connection with biodiversity. Through a multi-generational workshop with experts in the traditional Irish music field, a set of tunes will be developed that draws on some of these tunes. This will be documented by a filmographer who will create a video capturing the creative process and final performance and will be intertwined with some stock footage taken from the county, reflecting the biodiversity themes. The film will be shared across social media platforms by Galway County Council, Athenry Music School and other musical project partners. The event will be held in on a weekend date in late September, early October 2025.
Galway County Council Biodiversity Officer will provide a short education piece on the topics brought forward by the tunes selected, raising awareness with the workshop participants of the opportunities for a whole-of-society response to the biodiversity crisis.
Athenry Music School will be the principal lead partner for Wild Trad Tunes and will facilitate the administration and operation of the musical workshops. For more information or to get involved, contact Athenry Music School at athenrymusicschool@gmail.com
