Traveller Women's Storytelling Homes - Crafting Culture, Sharing Heritage
This project, facilitated by Visual Artist Teresa Doyle, will bring together women from the Chatters and Matters Tullamore Traveller Women’s Shed, with the support of the Tullamore Men's Shed, to create small wooden houses, wagons and camp structures that will serve as storytelling devices through which participants can express their culture, memories, and personal experiences.
The project will consist of a series of weekly workshops during which the participants will embellish and decorate the small homes, which will be constructed by members of the Men’s Shed, and transform them into vibrant expressions of Traveller heritage, incorporating traditional Traveller patterns, symbols, and imagery. The workshops will also be a space for creativity, conversation, and skill-sharing, allowing for an exchange of artistic techniques and cultural knowledge among Traveller women, in an open and supportive environment.
Once completed, the houses will be displayed in community spaces, and potentially cultural centres and schools, where they can be used to educate people about Traveller history, traditions, and lived experiences.
At its core, this project is not just about creating decorative pieces of art but is also about enabling Traveller voices to be heard and their stories preserved. By blending craftsmanship, storytelling, and artistic expression, this project aims to celebrate the experiences and traditions of Traveller women, and safeguard them for future generations.
