Traveller Voices
The Traveller Voices project from Creative Tradition aims to celebrate and collaborate with Traveller singers and musicians in Cork City through a series of concerts and workshops. Over the past decade, Creative Tradition has worked tirelessly to share traditional music, song, and culture across schools and the wider community in Cork's northside. This new project aims to honour the rich contributions of Traveller musicians and singers to Irish traditional music and provide a platform for their voices.
Traveller musicians have played a crucial role in preserving Irish music, with their talents ensuring the survival of this heritage. Through this project, we aim to highlight their contributions and inspire the next generation of singers and musicians. With the support of Creative Ireland funding, we will work with professional Traveller musicians and singers, offering an opportunity for emerging talents and school children to learn from seasoned artists including Thomas McCarthy and Niamh Dunne.
This initiative will coincide with the annual Féile Fearann Rí festival, amplifying its impact on the local community. The intergenerational and intercultural mix of participants will foster a more diverse and vibrant folk music festival. We will include elements of storytelling, Sean-nós singing, and the Irish language, enriching the cultural experience for all attendees.
