Traveller Pride Event - The Dead House - Martin Beanz Ward
Martin Beanz Warde is a highly respected actor, comedian, writer and producer and a proud member of the Traveller community. He also appears regularly on various national media platforms and as a free lance journalist writes regularly for the Irish Examiner. Martin has now written his first one man play called The Dead House. The Dead House is the story of one family in the west of Ireland and the return home of a son who is alienated from their traditions after years of deliberate absence. The play is set on the day of an Irish wake, when family stories resurface that have lain dormant for years and the ghosts of the past brings with them the memories of trauma, loss and despair. A wide range of issues are touched upon in the performance including family, loss of culture, loss, grief, social stratification, and suicide amongst others.
The performance will be followed by a Q&A session for audience members with Martin. We believe that the contents and subject matter of the play fit perfectly with the theme of Traveller Pride 2022 (Embracing a modern Traveller culture, with creativity in our roots). Martin Beanz Warde and his growing body of work embodies all that is positive, modern, progressive, and creative about modern Traveller culture and this is something which needs to be celebrated. His one man play ‘The Dead House’ deals with the loss and erosion of and disconnect with certain elements of Traveller culture, tradition and history.
