Tonnta 2025

This project involves the development of a new Irish language drama featuring the LGBTQ+ community centred around their relationship with the Irish language, with a particular focus on older community members.

Society is much more open to LGBTQ+ people than it used to be. This piece will engage older members of this community, to hear their stories and present a piece that celebrates an often forgotten section of Irish society. We will create something contemporary and current with stories that are often overlooked, with Brú Theatre having strong form on creating contemporary theatre inspired by our past. Workshops and a public sharing will occur in November and December 2025.  The piece will then also be presented in an Taibhdhearc as part of the Tonnta festival on Jan 31st 2025. Brú will work with their creative team and members of the LGTBQ+ identified through a call out in late Oct 2024. Trained in Physical Theatre and Devising, this will be a body first, thought provoking process and finished piece.

The production will be devised and directed by James Riordan of Brú Theatre Company.

The Tonnta Festival aims to promote the Irish language through bilingual cultural activities.
