“To and Fro” Chicago to Offaly
s“Midland Strings”, an adult amateur string ensemble based in Tullamore, are playing traditional tunes from Liz Carroll in the Tullamore Library during Heritage week. Liz Carroll is an Irish Fiddler, composer and recording artist. Liz was born in Chicago, Illinois, of Irish parents originating from Mucklagh, Co. Offaly. She is the first Irish-American musician to be nominated for a Grammy and the first American-born composer honoured with the Cumadoir TG4, Ireland’s most significant traditional music prize. Liz has published two books of her compositions, “Collected” (for Mom and Dad) and “Collected II” (for my Family). Many of Liz Carroll’s tunes are inspired by memories from holidays in Offaly during her childhood, where she visited her extended family. Liz has written many beautiful slow tunes, which William Troy is adapting to Midland Strings ensembles’ playing. Liz Carroll has generously permitted Midland String to arrange and play her tunes with harmonies.
William Troy, local composer from Ballyfin, is adapting the tunes to suit (violin, viola, cello and double bass). This gig is free due to the generosity of the Tullamore library and Creative Ireland Offaly and open to all ages.
Please join us (any age) during Heritage Week on Tuesday the 19st of August 2025 at 06.30 to 7.30pm in the Tullamore library.
