The Marriage of Strongbow and Aoife 1170
The Marriage of Strongbow and Aoife – commemorating the 850th anniversary of the marriage which changed the course of Irish history!
Waterford Treasures Museums in partnership with Central Arts Waterford will commemorate the marriage of the Irish Princess Aoife and the Anglo Norman knight Strongbow which took place in Christchurch Cathedral Waterford on the 25th August 1170.
Using the iconic painting by the renowned artist Daniel Maclise as a backdrop, the historic wedding will be re-enacted in Cathedral Square in the heart of Waterford’s Viking Triangle.
Maclise himself will be the narrator – introducing his painting, setting the scene and giving the historical background including the famous siege of the city which preceded the marriage.
But of course nothing is ever as simple as it seems and as the main characters come to life after 850 years and interact with Daniel Maclise they also will have their say.
Further information will be updated via the event site.
