The Heritage of Basketmaking in Leitrim
St Georges Heritage Centre are working with Helena Golden the Willow Woman on project based on celebrating Basketmaking in Leitrim.
As part of this project, St. George’s Heritage Centre and the Carrick on Shannon and District Historical Society invite the community to an evening celebrating the rich heritage of basketmaking in Leitrim.
The event, featuring renowned local craftswoman Helena Golden—also known as the Willow Woman—will take place on Wednesday, 4th September 2024, from 7:00- 8:00 pm at St George's Heritage Centre, St Mary’s Close, Carrick on Shannon. This engaging and interactive session will delve into the history, techniques, and cultural significance of basketmaking in Leitrim.
Helena Golden, a master of this traditional craft, will share stories and demonstrate the skills that have been passed down through generations. Attendees will also have the opportunity to contribute to a community project by adding sally rods to a Potato Basket.
The event is open to all—members and non-members alike. In addition to the evening’s
activities, attendees will get a sneak peek at an upcoming workshop in October, where they can
learn to create their own Leitrim Potato Basket.
