The Errill Famine Memorial Garden

The Errill Famine Memorial Garden project began several years ago when community research connected a Famine Pot which is housed in Errill Village to an old building in the Village. This building is now accepted to have been a Soup Kitchen during the Great Famine and one of only a few surviving examples in the entire country. Initial Creative Ireland funding supported a new plan for the development of the memorial garden.

The drawings for the garden have been completed and include a plan that will be used for the next stage of the project. A landscaper will create the garden with the help of community volunteers.

The landscaper will also work alongside a local artist who will be responsible for creating a fitting piece of art (with community consultation) which will form the centre piece of the garden and will possibly represent the fragile Errill Famine Pot.

The overall aim of the garden is to create a creative community space for people to visit, learn, and reflect on such a significant time in their communities past
