Telling the story of the Donegal Railway

The Donegal Railway Museum is the only museum of its type in the North West, telling the story of the unique railways that once operated across the entire County. However, the stories of many of the artefacts that have been donated by people from across this island has not properly been told. The aim is to produce interpretation panels for these artefacts as well as generate new information boards in order to tell this story, and ultimately make the museum more accessible, educative, and fun!

To reach out to local historians, historical societies and heritage groups, the County Museum, as well as communities across the County, to gather the information needed to create the interpretive panels, maps and access screen, to bring this story to the visitors and local community.

Separately, we will talk to museum experts to give advice on how best to present the new signage as well as the format it needed to be, to be more accessible.

Also in this to reproduce a series of all-Ireland and Donegal railways maps showing the evolution of the railways across Ireland, and how their coming and going affected the County.

And to make George Hanna’s famous model of Donegal Town, Killybegs and Inver, more accessible and better protected with the addition of a polycarbonate screen; it could not be properly viewed by children at the moment.
