Sweet Memories Choir

The Sweet Memories Choir is facilitated through the Occupational Therapy Department HSE Longford/Westmeath and the Alzheimer's Society Longford/Westmeath.

The Sweet Memories Choir is for any person with a diagnosis of Dementia/Alzheimer's and their family / loved ones / carers. The aim of the choir is to create a supportive, relaxed social space for people with dementia to meet and to promote a sense of inclusion, togetherness, achievement and self worth. It is and opportunity to engage in a meaningful activity with their family / carer / loved ones. This project has become a valued support network for local people and their families living with a diagnosis of dementia.

Rhythm and music are skills that are retained in later stages of dementia. People with the condition can struggle with every day memory but musical memories are often preserved in people with dementia because key brain areas linked to musical memories are of relatively undamaged. Music and singing help lift mood, provide cognitive stimulation and supports social interaction. All levels of singing abilities are welcome. You can sing, hum, clap along or just listen to the music. Its free to join.

This group meets fortnightly on Mondays from 12:00 to 13:30pm.
