Stockings for the Queen: Talk with Dr David Sorensen

The Balbriggan area has been synonymous with high-quality hosiery since the 1740s, with its finely crafted stockings, known as “Balbriggans”, holding a protected trade name for over 150 years. In the early 19th century, Joseph Smyth, a former Lancashire cotton mill manager, established Smyth & Co. in Balbriggan's Freemans’ Row (now Railway Street), producing stockings of such exceptional quality that they were worn by European royalty, including Princess Eugenie of Austria and the Tzarina of Russia. In 1837, the factory gained its most prestigious patron, Queen Victoria herself.

Dr. Sorensen’s talk and slide show will offer insight into the rich history of Fingal's hosiery and textile manufacturing industry, which inspired the group exhibition Weaving the Threads of Heritage. The exhibition opens in Ardgillan Gallery on 12th April and runs until 11th May 2025.

Venue: Drawing Room, Ground Floor, Ardgillan Castle. Entry through the main door at the front of the castle.
