Sligo Field Club: Nora Niland Essay
The Sligo Field Club Journal has been published annually since 2015. Its content, designed to have a wide appeal, includes contributions on Sligo’s archaeology, local history and its biodiversal ecology.
On occasion, Sligo Field Club Journal celebrates the lives and careers of people who have enriched life in Sligo. Among that group was the late County Librarian, Nora Niland (1912-1988), particularly for her assembly of an extensive Yeatsian artistic and literary collection. Having been appointed to County Sligo in 1945 she became a major contributor to Sligo’s cultural life until her retirement in 1979. On her influence the current Sligo County Library building was purchased in 1950 and the Sligo Museum was established in the Manse building in 1955. Having begun a Yeats family collection she with six others founded the Yeats Society in 1958 and in subsequent years assembled through donation and public and private purchase a collection of Jack Yeats works of major international prestige.
In acknowledgement of her foresight and enterprise, both literary and artistic, the journal’s editorial board has asked Hillary Pyle to write an article on Nora Niland. She will be commissioned to write and provide an article that will be published in the Journal in 2025.
