'SLIGO - a historic urban centre on the Atlantic Coast' was commissioned by the Heritage Office, Sligo County Council as an initiative under the Creative Ireland Programme 2019. The publication is part of the Archaeology Ireland Heritage Guide Series (No. 87) and was written by local historian Dr. Fióna Gallagher. The heritage guide charts the origins and development of Sligo from the 13th to the 20th century, a strategic nodal site along the western seaboard. The guide will be made available to subscribers of Archaeology Ireland (No. 2500) with the forthcoming December 2019 edition. The guide will also be launched in the Town Hall, Sligo on the 4th December 2019, where copies of the guide will be available free of charge to those attending. Copies of the guide will also be available through local bookshops.
The Sligo heritage guide blends heritage, history, urban architecture and community with writing, creative design and imagery. As a creative Ireland project it resonates with the deep connection we have with place, never was this more true than in Sligo.
