Shinrone Hurl: Conservation & Celebration
it is circa 1884 and Shinrone hurler and representative for the Club at the first Offaly G.A.A. County Board Meeting, Martin Fennel is busy making the 'Shinrone Hurl' for team mate, Bill Barry.
Some 140 years later, the hurl, in the care of Shinrone National School, holds a special place in the wider community and acts as a link to the history and development of hurling in South Offaly. Shinrone Heritage Group and Shinrone National School have commenced a conservation and stabilisation plan in partnership with a specialist wooden conservator. The aim of the conservation is to ensure the hurls future, have the hurl housed in a suitable frame and returned to Shinrone National Schools Museum for all to enjoy and appreciate.
On completion, the hurl will be unveiled as part of a public talk during Heritage Week 2023.
