Scribes - A Tabletop storytelling game
This project involves developing a tabletop game in the style of Dungeons and Dragons, with the young people developing the rules, theme and the art. The game will specifically focus on myths and folklore based in Sligo and its surrounds and is entitled SCRIBES, a reference to storytellers who are the key characters in the game. In the world of the game players will encounter and learn through gameplay about the rich heritage of myth and folklore of Sligo.
Local young people will meet regularly to design the game, create the rules and art to support the theme. As part of research in the project, local field trips to local sites of interest to inspire both the writing and illustration content of the game. In a nutshell, the project will promote tabletop gaming as a platform for socially-engaged and transformative artistic and creative practice.
At its end, the project will lead to the publication of a small print run of the resulting gamebook which will be made readily available to young people involved directly in the project but also others outside the project. It is envisioned that this will be a free product and stocked/delivered to local game stores and libraries for ease of access. Should the game be received well, there is scope to expand and further look at further editions/print runs in future.
