Planting the Seeds of Change. A Natural Dye Project at Dún na Sí

Sometimes we need to slow right down and take a deep dive into natural processes. This project starts with planting seeds, creating no dig gardens where we can nurture these young plants over several months, then harvesting them, so we can extract the colours to dye natural fabric and yarn. This immersive experience will be facilitated by local community artist, Patsy Preston and will take place in the grounds of Dún na Sí Amenity and Heritage Park in Moate, Westmeath.

We will learn about different types of fabric and how to prepare them to produce beautiful long lasting colours, we will experiment with kitchen scraps and forage for wild plants too in our search for a full spectrum of hues.

We will gather a couple of days a month over the course of 8 months to fully experience how the dying processes work, watch the plants grow and learn what different things become available to use as the seasons change. There is a growing interest in more responsible, sustainable ways of living, moving away from fast fashion and fabrics that contribute to plastic pollution.

The project will also delve into eco dyeing and printing, with the aim to create a collection of beautiful naturally dyed fabrics which we will make into unique handmade flags.

There will be a small fee to secure your place, these workshops are open to anyone over the age of 16 but numbers will be limited to ensure a good learning experience. Bookings can be made on the Dún na Sí website.
