Planet Parade
This project brings together mythology, astronomy, and spectacle through the creation of two large-scale parade puppets representing the planets, each linked to the Greek and Roman gods and goddesses they are named after. Inspired by the rich astronomical history of Birr Castle (home to The Great Telescope, once the largest in the world), this project explores the link between ancient mythology and our understanding of the cosmos. Birr Youth Theatre participants will design and make these figures, incorporating elements that reflect both the mythical power of the gods and the scientific characteristics of their planetary counterparts. The young performers will work on street performance, choreography, teamwork and theatre skills during a series of workshops and construct the puppets, bringing them to life during the Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival parade on August 3rd. They will interact with the audience while animating the planetary puppets, creating an immersive and engaging experience by allowing audiences to engage with the puppets through movement, storytelling, and theatrical encounters. This dynamic fusion of art, science and performance will highlight the enduring connections between mythology and astronomy, sparking curiosity and wonder, and representing the influence that Birr Castle’s inventions and discoveries have had in the world of Astronomy.
