Pakenham Papers - major collection of archive documents dating back to 1590
The Pakenham family, with the title Earl of Longford, holds a major collection of archives in Tullynally Castle, Castlepollard, County Westmeath. The collection spans the period c. 1590 to the late twentieth century, with the bulk of it dating from the eighteenth century onwards. The collection relates primarily to the family’s estates, which were mainly in Westmeath, Longford and Dublin. It is one of the most important private collections in this region.
The papers consist of deeds, leases, rent books, accounts, maps, surveys, correspondence and non-textual items. The larger part of the collection relates to land and property. There is voluminous correspondence between family members and involving many others including estate agents and solicitors.
The Archivists report has created a prioritized list of actions for the future management, conservation and digitization of the Pakenham Papers.
