Misleór Beady Pocket and Community Workshops

Galway Traveller Movement (GTM) is committed to promoting Traveller culture and heritage through the arts. GTM are seeking to strengthen our community arts programme with a new collaborative project. This will be developed throughout 2024 and showcased at this year's Misleór Festival of Nomadic Cultures.

In response to the wants and needs of the local Traveller community, particularly young Traveller women, GTM will lead a series of community workshops and exhibition on the Beady Pocket, including the creation of a giant 'Misleór Beady Pocket'.

Community workshops will take place with young Traveller women in Galway City, led by local Traveller artists Jane Ward and Nora Mongan. The participants will make their own beady pockets to be displayed as part of our Textiles exhibition in Nuns Island Theatre as part of this year's Misleór Festival.

Jane Ward and Nora Mongan will also be hosting two interactive beady pocket workshops during the festival - in the exhibition space.

To connect with other nomadic artists and cultures, Jane Ward and Nora Mongan are also working with the young Traveller women to create a 'Misleór Beady Pocket' - a ‘larger-than-life’ pocket, which will be decorated by our nomadic guests from around the world at this year's Misleór - and for years to come.
