Mapping Memories

Our aim in this project is to create a large-scale textile-based artwork with and for the participating women’s group. It will depict layers of story embedded in the changing landscape of the area. Rural communities are characterised by a strong sense of place, attachment to the land and the features of the landscape that are meaningful for different reasons among those who live there. Local landmarks, be they large or small, newly formed or historical features that have been there for centuries, all hold meaning and importance for the members of any community.

The project is open to all members of the Taughmon-Turin women’s group based in County Westmeath. It will encourage the members to gather and reflect on memories and their emotional attachment to their immediate environment, being then an accurate representation of the group’s collective voice.

The project will consist of a series of workshops designed and led by the main facilitator and project lead. She will work in collaboration with a local artist who has a strong interest in rural landscape.

The creative engagement will consolidate the group’s sense of belonging and feeling of connection to each other. The group will be asked to put a call out for information or stories from the wider community about certain places in the locality to create a more detailed archive. These shared narratives could then be part of the project, acknowledging them as part of a rich collective heritage.
