If Hazel Could Talk
Rooted in Traveller traditions and craftsmanship, If Hazel Could Talk is a community art initiative led by Galway Traveller Movement, in collaboration with artist Debbie Reilly. Participants will use hazel wood, a symbol of wisdom, protection, and shelter, to create unique artworks reflecting themes of nature, identity, and tradition.
Taking place over 8 workshops at Merlin Woods Community Garden, the project will feature guest artists, traditional custodians, and sustainability experts. Participants will explore hazel harvesting (coppicing), traditional shelter construction, and ethical approaches to working with natural materials, supported by Friends of Merlin Woods and Bounce Back Upcycling.
The final works will be showcased at the Misleór Festival of Nomadic Cultures (Sept 25–28, 2025), celebrating Traveller heritage, creativity, and sustainable craft
