Growing Art
Stephen Street Community Garden is a vibrant not for profit community urban agriculture group that formed with the common goal of growing organic food and pollinator-friendly plants in a densely populated inner-city environment where there is a dearth of private gardens or green public space.
A once overgrown and neglected site has been transformed into an aesthetically pleasing urban garden oasis, a communal space designed to encourage and support innovative, creative, educational and sustainable projects with food at their core. In 2024 the Stephen Street Garden community will engage with experts in the areas of sustainability and local food to host a series of talks, demonstrations and workshops on sustainable food production, leading up to a large street style feast on World Food Day in October, with people each bringing a dish to share.
Improving the beauty of the garden will be a key part of this project with plans to increase the art within the space through production of mosaic murals and decoration of existing structures, incorporating sustainable, natural and recycle materials.
Other programmed events will include demonstrations and talks on pickling fruit and vegetables, making pizza, sourdough starters, jams and herbal teas.
