Glenamaddy Diaspora Festival
Following the publication of ‘Our People, Our Heritage’, depicting the story of the town of Glenamaddy and the ancient parish of Boyounagh in North East Galway, Glenamaddy Heritage are currently planning a Diaspora Festival to celebrate and highlight the rich heritage of their place. The publication, which portrays a short history of more than one thousand resident families in the parish, has provided the impetus for a genealogy database, which is currently being developed.
Informed by this comprehensive and diverse snapshot of the social history of their place, portrayed through landscape, religion, education, the Irish language, farming, industry, social services, leisure activities and sport, the festival aims to creatively respond to this rich treasure trove through collaborations between community organisations, venues, artists and cultural practitioners. They will explore creative approaches to interpreting the heritage of their place and creative ways of engaging the community and the diaspora, with a view to establishing a solid foundation for an annual gathering and celebration of place for Glenamaddy Diaspora Festival.
The festival would be of special interest to the diaspora, genealogists, historians and researchers and it is hoped that it will consolidate and complement the cultural infrastructure of the place, while connecting communities and strengthening the appreciation of their cultural heritage and pride of place among local residents.
