Garden to Gallery: Athlone Arts & Tourism Climate Outreach Programme 2025
Garden to Gallery sees the expansion of Athlone Castle’s Historical Garden and Wildflower Meadow, and the merging of this project with Luan Gallery’s Climate Outreach Programme focusing on climate change, Irish ecology, and sustainability at Luan Gallery and Abbey Road Studios.
During this project, two community groups - service users of St. Hilda’s Services, and members of Athlone Active Age Retirement group, together with the general public will have an opportunity to participate in a guided visit to Athlone Castle’s Historical Garden where the Castle team will outline the history and folklore associated with the native herbs, flowers and vegetables growing in the garden. Participants will be encouraged to share their knowledge, stories, and recipes that relate to the plants and to engage with the plants on a sensory level and identify the plants that they would like to create artwork from or use as inspiration in the workshops.
Each group will participate in a series of three workshops focusing on sustainable arts practices which will be held in Abbey Road Artists’ Studios and, weather permitted, Plein Air in the Castle Garden.
The facilitators, each specialised in a particular sustainable arts practice and will guide participants in the processes of using organic material and plants from the Athlone Castle Garden in their artwork.
The artwork completed during these workshops will be exhibited in Luan Gallery at the end of the project.
