Empowerment Through Art: Workshops for Teens is a 12-week summer art course with artist Rachel Coyne.  Students will learn about developing a practice, how to come up with a creative project and how to discuss their own art to a group.  They will build communication and creative thinking skills, which will increase their overall confidence.  They will learn how to value art as a positive leisure activity, a tool for mindfulness and storytelling to engage in, as an alternative voice for self-expression.

We will explore drawing, painting, printmaking, observational drawing and imaginative composition building.  Rachel will share her own studio practice and arts journey with the students, how she come up with various ideas for her artwork and how they can research and create a narrative for their work.

Rachel will encourage students to research specific artists, who she feels will impact their work. Participants will use mixed media, to create alternative and imaginative compositions and explore figuration, abstraction, textures and installation ideas.

At the end of each workshop, participants will discuss their artwork in a “crit”.Often, young artists first experience a group critique at third level, which can be daunting.  Rachel aims to help students become comfortable speaking about their art with more confidence, for an easier transition to third level.
