Citywide Salons by Hugh Lane Gallery
Citywide Salons takes its inspiration from the seminal Irish artist Sarah Purser (1848-1943) whose exuberant and determined art-activism was so influential to the civic and cultural life of Dublin city during her long lifetime. As well as being an acclaimed painter, founder of An Túr Gloine, Purser was an enthusiastic supporter of Hugh Lane’s endeavours and instrumental in Charlemont House becoming the permanent home of the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art. Her studio in Harcourt Terrace and her Second Tuesday Salons at her home at Mespil House were famous meeting places for an exciting mix of contemporary characters eager to exchange and share ideas on art, music, literature and more.
An exhibition of work by Sarah Purser is taking place at the Hugh Lane Gallery from July 2024 to January 2025. Inspired by Sarah Purser’s Salons, this Citywide Salons art education project will see a curated programme aimed at bringing together a diversity of people to offer the opportunity of exploring together conversations, music, poetry, practical art classes, culinary experiences and more. Aimed at a diversity of ages, audiences and languages these Citywide Salons will take place in locations throughout the five areas of Dublin City Council as well as at the Hugh Lane Gallery. Led by artists and others, it is hoped that these Salons will be welcoming and inspirational places of ideas, collaboration, creative expression and shared experience.
