Cashel, Our Playground

Did you know that there used to be cowboys and Indians fighting in the Rock of Cashel? Or that the Grand National took place through Cashel people’s back gardens? At least until the neighbours complained about their hedges getting damaged.

Many people’s abiding memories of childhood is playing on the streets of the town. This came up again and again in our 2023 Memoir project. So this year, as well as continuing to gather memoir pieces for our website, we also hired Mark Fitzell, a well known local photographer to add a visual element to the project. His documentary of playing in the streets as a child captures the memories of a time when children could play hurling on the Main Street of Cashel and there were serious rivalry between different parts of town in Skittles.

In September a preview of the documentary was shown to members of the Day Care Centre in Cashel as well as TY students from Cashel Community School with the documentary on a loop during the Cashel Arts Festival.

We are glad now to have an opportunity to gather all those involved, especially Mark himself who was unable to be present during the festival to view the documentary at Cashel Library at 11am on Saturday 12th October.

Our memoir pieces are available to read on Cashelartsfest.com, which along with the documentary, provide a time capsule of stories from Cashel’s history which would otherwise be forgotten.

All are welcome!
