Breaking Barriers

Crann’s Breaking Barriers is a creative and fun theatre group for children (5-11years), young people (11-17 years) and adults (18+) with a neuro-physical disability. Over the past 5 years almost 120 children, teenagers and adults with neuro-physical disability have had the chance of equal inclusion in the arts through participation in Breaking Barriers. In March 2023 they had their first public performance in the Stack Theatre at MTU Cork School of Music.

As well as performance, Breaking Barriers is a chance to socialise and work on emotional development and communication. Drama uses storytelling, improvisation and creative thinking techniques. Participants learn to practice and perform in a range of arts from acting and singing to costume making, set design and more. Breaking Barriers enhances the wellbeing of all participants, their families, and the wider community.

With thanks to the Creative Cork Grant Scheme 2023, and in conjunction with our partners Blackwater Valley Opera Festival and Music Generation Waterford, Breaking Barriers will attend a ‘Discover Opera’ education and outreach experience in Lismore this May. This will be the group’s first field trip and exploration into the world of Opera. The project will explore music, story, set-design, costume, cast and crew through a series of workshops and the opera trail in Lismore Castle Gardens during the festival week led by a team of professional musicians, performers and music educators.
