Brandubh Commission
As a feature of the newly developed Queen Maeve Square, a giant interactive Brandub or Brandubh is due to be installed, which should engage the community and any passers by. As part of this project, artists and woodturners will be commissioned to design and make giant chess pieces.
Aptly, the queen would be modelled on Queen Maeve & the king on Ailil mac Máta, linking to the mythical Brown Bull of Cooley story.
The giant Brandub or Brandubh will be a unique feature of the chess board which members of the public and tourists can enjoy when passing through Queen Maeve Square
The traditional Irish version of Chess was know as Brandub or Brandubh. Played on a 7 x 7 board, Brandub requires 13 pieces (as opposed to 32 on a standard chess board). Typically the King is the main piece but in our case the primary piece would be a Queen, signifying Queen Maeve. She will be protected by 4 defenders (soldiers), and we would have 8 attackers . An added attraction is that this game would be less complicated to play then chess and so more accessible and desirable to all which makes this very apt in Queen Maeves Square.
