Birr Courthouse - Conservation Masterplan
Birr Courthouse is a key building on the approach road into Birr town. The last court was held here in 2013. Since then the building has been closed. In 2018 the community group Birr 20:20 carried out a study with Louise Brown Associates to examine what options the building could be used for and in particular for an artists’ hub. The outcome was the Creative Court proposal.
In 2021 Offaly County Council took over ownership of the courthouse from the OPW. Working closely with Birr 20:20 a Conservation Master Plan has been commissioned from Howley Hayes architects to explore the re-use of this protected structure as a creative hub led by the community. This project is receiving support from Creative Ireland, the Heritage Council and the local authority.
