Biddy's Day - Crafting Traditions

At the core of the Biddy's Day celebrations in Killorglin is the timeless tradition of Biddy groups, a revered custom that sees these spirited emissaries don straw hats and carry Brídeóg dolls on visits to both rural and public houses. Their mission? To weave a protective spell against malevolent spirits, ensuring the well-being of both humans and animals in the year ahead.

Immerse yourself in traditional craft-making workshops, including Biddy’s hat-making, traditional crosses, sugán weaving, and more. Accomplished artisans will be conducting workshops suitable for all ages, fostering a sense of connection to Ireland's rich cultural heritage.

Mike Coffey, Straw-weaving and traditional hat-maker will host a workshop on Saturday 21st September from 10am - 12pm. There are 12-15 place available.

Father and son crafters Tim & Jonathan O’Shea will host a traditional Sugán weaving and building workshop from 10am-1pm on Saturday September 28th.  Open to Adults and Teenagers - Min age 15yr old, places will be limited to 12 for this workshop.

Caoimhe Dunn, will start work on the parade float in August with the festival committee, some local volunteers and craftsmen. This year she hopes to construct a float to safely and stylishly transport the Bridget’s Flame as part of the parade.

Caoimhe will return on Sat October 26th from 11am - 1.30pm to host a kid’s willow lantern-making workshop that will be featured as part of the Samhain festivities. 20+ kids and parents.
