An Old Song Half Forgotten
Sofft Productions is directing and producing a documentary with Bryan Murray. He is one of Ireland’s most celebrated actors, known for his roles in Strumpet City, The Irish RM, Bread, Brookside, and Fair City, and he has been living with Alzheimer's disease since 2019. Despite the challenges of memory loss, he courageously returned to the stage in 2023 for An Old Song, Half Forgotten, a play written specifically with his condition in mind by playwright Deirdre Kinahan. This documentary follows Bryan’s remarkable journey back to the stage and how his life continues outside the theatre, capturing both the behind-the-scenes process of rehearsals and the innovative ways the production supports his unique needs. The film weaves together two narratives: Bryan’s history in theatre and television, portrayed through archival footage, and the emotional journey he embarks on back at the Abbey Theatre—the very space where he first found his calling. This includes the creation of an evocative visual metaphor that will be a key component of the documentary: The Abbey stage and Bryan slowly illuminated, symbolising the uncovering of Bryan’s memories and his powerful connection to music, emotion, and memory. On the very stage where it all began for Bryan, he will explore his emotional memories, setting the tone for a story about memory, loss, and the power of art.
