Monksland Choir
Monksland community choir draws participants from a number of local organisations including, St. Hilda's Athlone voluntary services who provide comprehensive quality services to people with mild, moderate and severe intellectual disabilities, local mental health service users and providers, local nursing homes, Rehab services, active retirement groups and some members of the local community.
The choir meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month, providing a social outlet in a safe and welcoming community setting for its more than 30 members. The choir has operated up until this point on the back of local volunteer support. With the support of Creative Ireland funding a qualified music instructor who holds an MA in Community Music will be put in place for the development of the choir. Through the expertise of this instructor, the choir will obtain support necessary to allow the group to participate in local events during 2020.
The Monksland area is home to one of the most diverse populations in the county of Roscommon. The choir has successfully engaged with individuals in the local community who have in the past encountered barriers to participation in cultural, sporting or other community activities. Its continued success is a vital thread in the fabric of this new emerging community.
