From Hawthorn to Celtic High Cross

The loss of the hawthorn tree in 2024 due to Storm Darragh was a shock to the community of Rahan, Co. Offaly, creating a shared sense that it should be celebrated and remembered. According to the landowner, the solitary hawthorn tree, was planted by his grandfather between 80 and 100 years ago.  Celtic High Crosses have borne witness to Ireland's historical events over the millennia. They continue to inspire and captivate future generations, weaving a rich tapestry of cultural heritage and craftsmanship deeply rooted in Irish culture and this has inspired the community to work with a carver in relation to design and creation of a celtic high cross carved from the wood of the fallen hawthorn tree.  In addition, two creative workshops will be organised with schools from Tullamore, Rahan, Clara, Ballycumber and Boher, run by Mie World Clara and supported by Clara Heritage Society to learn about the heritage and history of the Rahan Monastic Site, which includes the Ancient Church and Graveyard of St. Carthage. As part of Workshop 1,  Offaly Biodiversity Officer, will engage with the children about the significance of trees in combating climate change. Bishop Pat Storey will unveil The Celtic High Cross at the annual Ancient Church and Graveyard of St. Carthage’s  Harvest Celebration on Sunday, 26th October 2025. The children’s art from the two creative workshops will also be displayed in the church. Refreshments will be served after the service.
