Shanty Singing Workshop
Each year on the last day of the festival there is a novelty pirate parade throughout the village. As a new initiative to celebrate the 15th anniversary local artist Medbh Gilliard (https://medbhgillardcom.wordpress.com) will design and facilitate a prop and costume making workshop for the children to wear and engage in the parade. It will engage local families, including Ukrainian children residing in the village allowing for integration and a shared community experience.
This workshop will provide greater access for locals to celebrate the area's heritage and seafaring culture through family based activities.
FREE SHANTY SINGING WORKSHOP
The workshop will be interactive and informative. It offers a brief history of shanties and their importance in maritime culture. It introduces the different types of shanties such as hauling shanties, capstan shanties, and halyard shanties and how they were used on ships.
It encourages participants to learn and sing along to the various rhythms and multiple part harmonies. The sessions will be led by Tom Lewis, a well known International Shanty Performer (www.tomlewis.net) assisted by some of the festival performers which fosters collaboration and sharing of knowledge among out international performers. At the end of the workshop the participants partake in a small to showcase what they've learned and to experience the joy of singing shanties together.
