Subh, Dubh agus Cnuasach na Tíre (Jam, Black and the Fat of the Land)
Cnuas: nuts or wild fruit. Cnuasach: garnered or gathered things…
This series of foraging and cooking workshops will offer engagement with the Irish language by exploring the traditions, stories and lore of picking and preserving local wild fruits such as the elderflower, bilberry, and blackberry. With field trips to gather the fruits and flowers, and demonstrations of how to make cordial, jam, and chutney, participants will encounter the Irish language in new ways and connect them to the earthy origins of the language itself. The group will design and make málaí sealgaire, foraging bags, and keep dialanna, diaries or journals in which they will record their experiences, recipes, and cnuasach focail, their gathered words.
Subh, Dubh agus Cnuasach na Tire is one of Creative Ireland Wexford’s six Irish Language projects for 2025, meeting our strategic priority to ‘promote the love and use of the Irish language in our community’.
