Imeartas Focal (Word Play)
Imeartas Focal (Word Play) explores the Irish language through the creative concept of playing with words. Four iterations of bespoke creative workshops will take place in Askamore Community Centre, where participants will be supported to speak Irish, while engaging with multiple artistic genres.
Led by writer Sylvia Cullen, an Gaeilge will be explored through proverbs, slang, idioms, recipes and aphorisms. The focus will be broadeded into different forms of creative expression such as short films and poetry. Involving Spoken Word as an art form, participants will be invited to write a ‘List Poem’ where they create and give voice to a poem of their own, in the form of a simple list.
Working with singer Honor Heffernan and the Askamore Choir, participants will be guided on a journey of discovery through Irish heritage in amhránaíocht, listening to a selection of songs and discussing their lyrics. A celebration evening will comprise of a live performance of song, poetry and short story readings, to mark An Bhailchríoch. More information to follow.
Imeartas Focal is one of Creative Ireland Wexford’s six Irish Language projects for 2025, meeting our strategic priority to ‘promote the love and use of the Irish language in our community’.
