Sweet Dreams: Lullabies across the World
Supported by Nasc, the Migrant and Refugee Rights Centre, this project will unite migrant and refugee women in Cork City through the universal language of lullabies, fostering cultural understanding and empowerment. Over six months, around 20-25 women from diverse backgrounds will participate in weekly workshops led by artist Mary O’Mahony, who has experience working in trauma-informed, women-only spaces. The participants will create mixed-media artworks inspired by lullabies that hold deep personal significance, reflecting their cultural heritage and shared experiences.
The project will culminate in an exhibition where the artworks, paired with recorded lullabies, will be showcased alongside the participants’ artistic statements. These pieces will also be turned into postcards, each linked to a recording of the lullaby via a QR code. The exhibition will offer the public an opportunity to engage with the stories and emotions of the participants, encouraging a deeper understanding of the migrant and refugee experience.
By sharing their lullabies and stories, the participants will find a sense of pride and accomplishment, while the wider community will gain insight into the rich cultural traditions and personal journeys of these women. The project aims to bridge cultural gaps, foster empathy, and contribute to a more inclusive society in Cork.
