Cork Mosque Tile Mosaic

The Cork Islamic Cultural Centre (CICC) is a vital hub for the Muslim community in Cork City, serving not only as a place of worship but also as a welcoming social space for people from all backgrounds. It offers Quranic and Arabic classes for children every weekend, fostering both religious and cultural education.

In Summer 2024, Amna Walayat, a member of the Cork Three Faiths Forum and the Muslim community, will lead a creative summer camp at the mosque, teaching children the art of tile making. Drawing on the rich Islamic tradition of Arabesque, geometric, and floral designs, the children will learn the basic skills of tile crafting, with the freedom to infuse their own creativity and cultural heritage into their work.

Amna, whose own art practice is rooted in her hybrid cultural experiences and Indo-Persian traditional style, is passionate about nurturing creativity in young minds. The workshops will empower the children to take ownership of their designs, allowing them to express themselves through this ancient art form.

Each child will create their own tile, which will be fired at the National Sculpture Factory, then coloured, varnished, and permanently displayed in a mosaic within the mosque. Working with clay—a natural and meditative material—offers the children a unique way to connect with their creativity and the earth, promoting well-being and cultural expression.

Over 100 handcrafted tiles will showcase the rich traditions of Islamic art within the Cork community.
