A History of Galway in Objects (Phase 2)
As part of Phase 1 of its ‘History of Galway in Objects’ project, Galway City Museum was supported by Creative Ireland to engage artists to develop creative activities in response to several Museum objects and to trial educational and creative activities in the classroom (click HERE). This was successfully completed, and the resources and activities are currently being reviewed by a working group of primary school teachers.
Building on this, the Museum is now working to bring the material to life as a downloadable resource, which will be available on the Museum’s website. In addition, the Museum will commission a series of ‘slow-looking’ videos with experts about the objects as an additional online resource and to create a small temporary exhibition of banners about the project for the Education Room at Galway City Museum, which would help to promote the project and its educational resources.
Among the key aims are:
- teach about the events and personalities that have formed the character of the locality to which the pupils belong;
- develop civic awareness and increase a sense and pride of place;
- spark curiosity and support critical thinking;
- develop historical empathy;
- improve the ability of the pupils to shape their own view and perspectives on history, culture and art;
- to stimulate imagination, memory and cognition through the sensory experience associated with thinking about objects.
Please note that the details of events listed above are provided by the relevant Local Authorities.
