Coolbock Crossroads Dance
Crossroads Dancing was a weekly social event in our grandparents and great grandparents lives right throughout the summers of their youths. On Sundays, musicians, singers and dancers would gather at the local crossroads and spend the afternoon enjoying each others company. Young and old gathered at Coolbock Crossroads to dance and play music right up to the 1970s. In 2013 we resurrected the crossroads dance at Effrinagh Co. Leitrim and it has been a huge success over the years since. In 2022 we resurrected the crossroads dance at Coolbock Crossroads Co. Sligo as part of LLPS, and it was highly successful with over 250 attendees on the day. Dress is disarmingly informal. There is no vanities at this dance, just dancing barrels and barrels of fun! It is simply a gathering of a community for an afternoon of music, song, dance and socialising. All ages, all cultures, all nationalities, everyone is welcome at the crossroads.
At 3pm musicians strike up the first tunes and the lead dance artists call the first dance and help the onlookers find partners. A half hour in and the whole place is dancing to the music. In between the dances, the musicians, singers and dancers perform for the audience which is always well received with great silence and respect and then huge applause and appreciation. Many of the audience members step forward to sing or perform a recitation too.
There are 24 artists listed to perform.
