Introduction to sewing and textile art
We propose a project for women and men based around sewing and textiles. Many households
have a sewing machine that has had very little use because of lack of instruction in the basic
techniques of setting up and using one. This course aims at addressing this problem by first
setting out a basic training course where people can bring along their own sewing machine or
use one provided and learn how to use it. The workshop would then go on to produce an item of
clothing for instance an apron, work pull-ups or an item of personal choice to practice the skills
learned and where and how to apply them. In this way participants will be introduced to:
Applique Art through mending holes
The art of mending i.e. inserting a zipper, buttons, taking up a trousers hem etc.,
Creative embroidery using a sewing machine
Patchwork and quilt making
Our hopes are manyfold. Apart from the obvious instruction and proficiency in the use of a
sewing machine we want to promote an attitude of repair, reuse and recycle. We want to
promote and buy into the idea of the circular economy. We are tapping into the resources in our
community as we are so fortunate to have a number of creative artists living in the area who are
willing to become involved and pass on their skills. Our lead artist Sophia is involved in many creative initiatives with local groups such as CLASP and the ICA and has been promoting and running several workshops such as flower arranging, meet and make sessions, singing circle etc.
