"Nature and Me" Children’s Poetry Workshops
Nature and Me Children’s Poetry Workshops will see author Shelley Corcoran visit schools in County Longford. These workshops will see Shelley reading her poetry and talking with schoolchildren about the creative process of poetry. This will be followed by each child writing their very own poem centred around nature.
During the workshops, students will spend time in nature local to their school while drawing inspiration for their poems. The workshops will benefit the children involved as rhyming teaches them the sounds that words are made of. Poetry is a bridge that connects children to the relevance of writing, reading, learning, creativity, and community. It raises children's awareness of words and grows children’s vocabulary. Poems are often thought-provoking and can stimulate further discussions and learning opportunities. Writing poetry gives children freedom and allows for experimentation.
The culmination of these school workshops will be the launch of Shelley's illustrated book “Nature and Me”. 10 poems will be selected from the workshops and children will read their poems during the launch. They will also be presented with a special framed print of their poem.
