Traveller Men Creating with Pride

Meath Travellers' Workshop (MTW) is a voluntary community development organisation, which is a partnership of Travellers and settled people working together.  For this project,  MTW will bring together a group of Traveller men from across County Meath to design, create and develop a St. Brigid’s Grotto along with a reflective bench on the grounds of Meath Traveller's Workshop in the centre of Navan.

This intergenerational project will provide an opportunity for older Traveller men to share their experience, knowledge and traditional skills with the younger Traveller generation.  It will also create a social outlet that will build bonds, promote good mental health and nurture and value traditional Traveller skills. The men will be facilitated to research the history of St Brigid and to design, create and build a grotto that will be open to the public at specific times.

Associated with fertility and new life, St. Brigid is an important part of Traveller culture.  The creation of a St. Brigid’s Grotto offers the opportunity for this group of Traveller men to leave a beautiful creative legacy that will become an important space for the local Traveller community that can also be shared with visitors.
