Creative Ireland and the Department of Health announce support for 11 Live Music in Residential Healthcare Settings projects.

These performances will support positive ageing, and provide creative engagement opportunities for older people who were socially isolated. In 2024 Creative Ireland and the Department of Health will support the following.

Musicians-on-Call project involves musicians visiting hospitals and healthcare settings across Limerick, Clare and Tipperary, performing for patients and residents. The programme aims to bring high-quality live music to vulnerable older members of our communities and create a shared experience for all. It also aims to promote health and well-being through music providing Music in Healthcare Workshops to HSE staff.

Messages in a Bottle is presented by Creative Kilkenny and will include the documentation of 4 visits weaving a tapestry of melody and memory to 5 different health care settings in Kilkenny, Carlow, Waterford and Wexford. By capturing the reactions, comments, sounds, singing and engagement this project will enable deeper connections within the service provision

Shining a Musical Light is a partnership between Cork City Council, Music In Community, Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, Cork Age Friendly Programme, and Cork Healthy Cities. The project addresses the unique needs of the elderly population by harnessing the therapeutic power of music, bringing a programme of live music performances into residential healthcare settings in Cork City.  Music sessions, live performances, and collaborative activities tailored to stimulate memory, foster social interactions, and enhance overall quality of life will be delivered by Music In Community’s team of experienced musicians

Music in the Moment is an engaging programme of live performances across Dún Laoghaire Rathdown. It brings high quality cultural music experiences to older people living in residential settings in the area, with the aim to have a positive impact on the lives of older people, including those living with dementia.

Tea, Chats & Tunes in Meath and Louth is led by accomplished musicians affiliated with Music & Health Ireland and aims to foster connections through music, emphasising equity and shared social engagement while accommodating the unique circumstances of healthcare settings.

Laois Musical Memories will be led by a professional team of musicians and choral directors. These inclusive sessions will bring music and song out to those living in care homes.

Cavan Holistic Harmonies in Nursing Homes is an ambitious project that will deliver two choirs of Older People, Samba Drumming workshops, singing and music performances along with celebration performances in three local libraries throughout the county. Five participating nursing homes from across Co Cavan will be offered a choice of activity and asked to consult with their residents. This will ensure that the voice of the older people is heard.

The Rí Rá Sessions is a Traditional Irish Music and Dance programme for three HSE-managed centres in Wexford. Delivered by the Wild Turkeys, who will provide twelve lively music sessions for residents in each care setting alongside movement expert Vivian Brodie-Hayes who will encourage residents to move to their ability. Together they will develop a basic toolkit to help care staff to introduce aspects of live music and gentle movement participation on a regular basis. The Rí Rá Sessions will act as outreach for the concerts and sessions strand of Fleadh Ceoil na hEireann taking place in Wexford this year.

The Mayo Care Concerts Summer Series deliver four performances in five residential care units between May and October. This will address the need to increase access to high quality live performances and will create a buzz for the residents, their families and the staff. This programme also includes a capacity building workshop that will bring together members of residential care units and musical artists.

Monaghan Melodies and Memories will engage local creatives in the delivery of an eclectic programme of live music and storytelling, inspired by the rich history and heritage of County Monaghan and the borderlands. The show will incorporate covers from local showbands, hits from Big Tom and Paddy Cole and traditional Irish music sets including the Ballybay Polka. Live music will be interspersed with local yarns and poems from the Drumlin hills, performed by local storytellers and the care home residents themselves. It is hoped that storytelling will reduce feelings of stress and isolation, and improve social connections.

The Summer Sessions led by Donegal County Council in partnership with Age Friendly Ireland, Healthy Ireland and the HSE will roll out  mini music residencies to nine residential care centres to  bring music, good craic and a sing along to more than 300 residents.
