Vernacular Architecture of Offaly - Aharney Thatch

The focus of this project is thatch repairs carried out by Philip Doran, midlands thatcher to  a detached four-bay single-storey thatched farmhouse, which would've been quite typical for the time period in County Offaly built c.1800.

This picturesque farmhouse located at Aharney, Tullamore has a pitched rye straw roof with decorative scolloping to slightly raised ridge and chimney and rendered stone walls. The site includes outbuildings attached to east gable with roofless lean-to roof and stone walls.  The farmhouse retains  the old timber sash windows. The associated outbuildings add interest to the site and context to the house.

This property features in 'Traditional Architecture of Offaly' by Rachel McKenna which was published  by Offaly County Council in 2022.

While no event has been organised to mark the conservation works, the property is clearly visible from the public road and there has been a lot of interest locally.
